About time, if you’ll forgive the pun.

I don’t know Jodi Whittaker’s work but I’m pleased that The Doctor is finally being played by a woman. I have to say, although I thought they should have done it for the 12th Doctor, I wouldn’t have missed Peter Capaldi’s time as The Doctor for anything but I’m really looking forward to this Doctor too.

Predictably there have been some naysayers. The Daily Mail asked where have ALL the male heroes gone. Someone responded with an excellent infographic that sadly I can’t find, but it started off with Thor, Superman, Spiderman, Iron Man, Captain Jack Sparrow, and kept going with row after row of them and each row getting more and more, smaller and smaller pictures crammed on to it to make the point. Twitter has had a bunch of excellent ripostes, to which my favourite two have to be:

Just used my TARDIS’ telepathic circuits to enter the mind of someone opposed to a female Doctor. It’s much smaller on the inside.

The Daleks have announced the gender of The Doctor does not affect their desire to exterminate.

A comment on a fan-site also made my favourite’s list:

When my 10-year-old nephew recently asked if the Doctor had ever been a woman, his reaction to the answer was, "Why not? That's stupid."

I’m not one of those people who left Doctor Who and will be brought back by this announcement, but my little corner of tumblr is pretty full by people saying this news will bring them back to watch the show.

Here’s wishing all the best to the new team holding the key to the TARDIS.
