So, my copy of Snow Leopard arrived today. A couple of hours later both machines are running it quite happily.
Let's start with the bad news (there's not much actually).
- Not installing Rosetta seems like a losing prospect. There are just too many things that demand it. Happily Second Life isn't one of them. But most AppleScripts are and although I don't use many the ones I do use are pretty much essential (to my mind) so there you go.
- Mail 4.0 has pretty much killed all the plug-ins I used for it. Growl (which I keep saying I don't use but can't imagine being without sometimes), Letterbox and Dockstar have ALL died. Hopefully they'll be fixed soon!
And what's good?
Well, quite a lot seems faster. Most things work smoothly. There's lots of little touches I've already noticed... right clicks on the dock are a different background (nice) and slightly differently structured (helps for people like me with a lot of options for browsers on right-click). Have yet to try QuickTime etc. but I suspect that will all be nice too.
And, of course, Second Life runs nicely and quickly.
Update: DockStar was actually updated BEFORE Snow Leopard got here. I was just out of date. Downloading the updated version was simple, installing it quick, and it remembered all my old preferences. Good times. GrowlMail, I will see. Letterbox I miss terribly though. Nearly enough to make me look for a different mail client in the interim. Not quite yet though.
GrowlMail isn't quite stable yet, but there's an alternative that I found thanks to googling.
Hunter Ford wrote an AppleScript that does the job just wonderfully. You can find it, and full instructions here.
As I write, Letterbox is due in about a week. Can't wait. That will be ALL of my little adds-on back in the box.
Letterbox took a bit longer to come out than expected, but it's here in a beta form. It works a treat for me. Only growl to go... the whole of growl is now dead though and I'm waiting for 1.2 to come along and run natively in 64-bit mode.
Not previously mentioned, had to upgrade menu meters, but it took seconds and works a treat.
